I have given few easy techniques which can be applied by just modifying .htaccess file these edits will increase search engine visibility, and help search engine bots to gather required data easily from your WordPress blog.

1. Remove Category Sub Directory from WordPress Permalinks via .htaccess.

Use this code to remove /category/ permalink structure from your wordpress blog, just add following lines into your .htaccess file.

[syntax type=”html|php|js|css”]RewriteRule ^category/(.+)$ http://www.yourblogname.com/$1 [R=301,L][/syntax]

2.  Change your WordPress feed URL to FeedBurner URL via .htaccess

Usually if you are using Permalinks the wordpress feed URL will be http://yoursite.com/feed/ now if you are using feedburner for RSS Feeds you can redirect visitors to

[syntax type=”html|php|js|css”]

<IfModule mod_rewrite.c>
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/?(feed.*|comments.*) [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} !^.*(FeedBurner|FeedValidator) [NC]
RewriteRule ^feed/?.*$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/yourfeed [L,NC,R=302]
RewriteRule ^comments/?.*$ http://feeds.feedburner.com/yourcommentfeed [L,NC,R=302]
</IfModule>

[/syntax]

3. Tell bots about sitemap URL via .htaccess file

There are several complex themes are available for WordPress which are commonly used by many bloggers therefore due to complexity of those themes sometimes its difficult for bots to crawl your website and get sitemap URL. By this little modification in .htaccess file we can inform bots to get sitemap directly.

[syntax type=”html|php|js|css”]

# CANONICAL SITEMAPS
<IfModule mod_alias.c>
RedirectMatch 301 /sitemap.xml$ http://example.com/sitemap.xml
RedirectMatch 301 /sitemap.xml.gz$ http://example.com/sitemap.xml.gz
</IfModule>

[/syntax]
By applying above mentioned small tricks you will be able to add more visibility in search engines for your blog or website.
