Cheap Home-made Solar Fan

In recent days Iam working on Alternate and Efficient energy related projects, I have searched market for such prodcuts, these products are not commonly available in market and the products which are available in market are of quite high rates. Therefore I have decided to work on a project which will be affordable for masses.

So here is a simple project. I have used a Solar Panel as charger its 10W panel for charging a 12V 7 Amperes battery and I have used a SOGO car fan.

Circuit is quite simple.

solar circuit Cheap Home made Solar Fan

Parts List:

Solar Panel: 10w Solar Panel.

D1: 1N4004 Diode (Any 1 Amp diode)

B1: 12V / 7A Battery

Fan: Sogo Car Fan 12V

All stuff is easily available in market cost of solar panel is 2800 to 3000/- PKR (as per 06-25-2011)  Cost of Fan is 400 to 500 PKR, Battery price is 750 to 850 PKR depends on brands, switch and diode will be available in under 10 to 15 rupees only.

So total cost will be under 4200/- and fan airflow is really awesome even you can compare it with any of emergency light available in market within this price range.

Solar panel will charge battery within 8 to 10 hours in sunlight and fan be operated for 4 to 5 hours after 10 hours solar charging. If you want to double charging speed simply add one more solar panel.

    Hi Faraz

    Excellent work !
I have a Westpoint 3 in 1 fan but it runs on 6 Volt battery. Can I charge its battery with such solar panel ?

    • Faraz Ahmed April 5, 2012 at 5:40 am - Reply

For that you need 6V Solar Panel (which is really difficult to find in Karachi Market) however you can also use a LM317 IC circuit for charging 6V battery with 12V solar panel.

      Hi Ahsan,

Thanks for complements, I haven’t seen 12V bladeless fans in market, however if you have any 12V fan it can work perfectly (timings will be depend on its current usage).

      Thanks and best regards

Well said, but we all need to appreciate that adding Solar to their house is an asset which could boost the actual valuation of their residence if / when they choose to sell. With the environment the way it is going we simply cannot ignore any system that provides zero cost electricity at no cost to both the shopper and more importantly the earth!

Mistake in schematic. Diode placement is not correct it should be in serires with battery circuit. It will flow of current in one direction only, help full when not charging.
